Behind the space: Amoblar espacios pequeños

Behind the space: Furnishing small spaces

Sometimes we think it's easier to furnish a large, light-filled space with high ceilings or huge doors. And it's true that a large space makes it easier to move furniture or separate spaces. However, most people live in apartments with small areas, with small rooms where options and often ideas are limited, but this doesn't mean that a small space can't have a great design.

1. Keep the space tidy

Clutter prevents good ideas from coming through, chaos and the accumulation of objects are enemies of small spaces. We often keep old furniture thinking that we will be able to use it at some point. However, when we finally get the courage to donate, sell or throw it away, we feel like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders: we are releasing our energy, allowing it to flow correctly again.

2. How to decorate a small entrance

The entrance hall of any house or apartment is an important place, as it is the first space we see when we arrive. If we are talking about a small space, it is important that there are no objects that impede the passage or block circulation. The decoration should be very minimalist, the lighting should be warm and very strong or dark colours on the walls should be avoided.

3. Small social area

In loft-style apartments where all the spaces are unified and not differentiated, it is essential to divide them with light furniture, a bookshelf that lets in light or plants as dividers that help maintain the light.

The use of colour is important. Don't overuse white. All the decoration guides for small spaces talk about white as the key to creating a feeling of spaciousness. This is completely true: light colours, and especially white, trick the eye into thinking that the space is bigger. However, we run the risk of overdoing it and ending up creating cold, characterless spaces.

Use light, soft and warm colours. Beige, very soft yellows or oranges or some greens follow the same principle as white, they give a feeling of spaciousness, but are warmer and more pleasant, and promote a more harmonious energy.

Use an accent wall. If you think white is the best color for your living room or bedroom, you can use that, but to avoid making the space feel cold, use a different, warmer color on the most prominent wall and balance it with the decor.
